Why wont my Minecraft Lancher work?

  • I bought minecraft a couple of days ago and when i downloaded it for windows (i have a windows 7 pc) an icon with came up on my desktop called 'Minecraft' and when i clicked on it it came up with 'Minecraft launcher'. In the bottom right corner there is a box to log in so i type in my login+password and then it says in red writing 'cannot connect to minecraft.net' so i click 'play offline' and it goes to a black screen!

    Hey. Servers might be down at the moment. Or you may need to update your java to play. Its the thing that runs it because minecraft is like webpage based. In source i left a link for you to check your local minecraft server is running and a link to download java. It wont let you play even offline until you have logged in and verified you own the game.
