What are the dorms at UCLA like?

Should I live in the dorms or UCLA apartments?

  • I'm going to UCLA (!) in the fall as a transfer student/bio major, and I'm trying to decide on housing. I do have friends that go there, but I know it will still be hard adjusting. I want to live in the dorms because I like how easy it will be to get to know people. I'm a really social person, and I love having fun/going out. I also like having a place where I can study (and I don't mind if the only place to do that is the library). I keep hearing things like "what kind of transfer student lives in the dorms?" and "why would you want to be around a bunch of freshmen and sophomores?" I was just wondering how many transfer students typically stay in the dorms during their first year. I mean, I just turned 20, so there's not thaaaaat much of an age difference between me and the freshmen and sophomores. What should I do?

  • Answer:

Congratulations! I'm a Bruin and UCLA is a great school. I went there a few years ago, but there were a ton of transfer students living in the dorms when I was there. If you just turned 20, you will not be much older than any of the other students in the dorms and it isn't weird at all. If you want, you could request to live in the suites (Saxon or Hitch) which tend to be more juniors and seniors than the highrise residence halls (like Dykstra, Hedrick and Rieber). I think they try to house transfer students together anyway.
