How can I concentrate on my revision for exams?

University exams next week HELP!?

  • I am very unprepared and I feel like I don't know anything since I can't answer past paper questions. I got through other exams like A levels with revision starting a few days before but this time obviously theres too much to cover and remember in such a short time. Can I get some advice on how to go about researching and revising? I wish i'd have been able to concentrate more in lectures so I guess i've lost quite a lot of valuable info. If anyone knows any good online biology sources im sure that'd help too. My first exam is tuesday. Thanks

Ach, for several years after I graduated I used to have a recurring nightmare that I was back in that situation. I know how you feel, I went through a BEng and an MSc doing exactly the same... and now it really shows in the workplace!! Doh! But we are where we are. As above, if its a wordy subject nothing beats repetition, but it needs to be hand written. I think its something to do with body connecting with mind, so you're that much more aware of what you're writing and it sticks. With numbers subjects its all about the past papers. Even if you don't understand the process, repeating the way the numbers fit together over and over until it sticks. Biggest tip - play the percentages game. Pass rates at uni are often ridiculously low, and if you look at the past papers there'll always be one or two questions that come up year after year, almost identical. If the exam is an 'answer four out of five' questions you should be able to nail at least one, completely. You only need to get half marks in another two to get 50%, and anything in your fourth question then is a bonus. That's the game I played all the way through my academic life, and it worked. ... but I'm paying for it now. I could have been a contender. hey ho.

Different people have different techniques, so I am aware that these might not help you. I am really bad for leaving revision until last minute, I cram everything in over a short period of time and it usually does nothing but stress me out. However, I always use repetition, writing things out (typing may be quicker) several times, until I feel comfortable with it, move on to another subject, go back to the one you studied earlier etc, just keep going over it. Also, I find it helpful when other people are involved, so if you have any friends that are doing the same course you could test each other, swap and compare notes, and that way you will help each other through it. Also, the night before exam, SLEEP! and in the morning EAT! :) I hope that this is of some use to you. Good luck!

Are you enjoying or hating revision. You probably have never been taught how to revise and so you dont know where to start or what method suits you.We all learn in different ways. You need to find the way that works for you. After all you cannot revise that which was never learned in the first place. Have a look at the site below to see if it helps.Good luck either way
