Where is the best places in Southern California to build a ranch home?

I'm moving to California and I'm planning to build a home there. A girl friend and I plan on sharing this place and we both want a transitional/electric type of ranch home. We gotta buy land first of course but what places do you guys recommend for us to search in?

I don't think Santa Monica or Los Angles are good places for a ranch. They're too over-populated and there's a greater chance it'll get vandalized and/or broken into. I personally think you should try anywhere in Cali but southern Cali. Like mid Cali, or Northern Cali. Maybe Susanville, it's close to the top and a perfect place for a ranch. I want a ranch myself when I grow up, and I drove through Susanville a couple years ago, immediately fell in love and pictured my ranch there.
