How do I warm up my voice before I sing?

How do I get my high voice back when I usually can sing extremely high?

  • I have gone through lots of things with my voice in the past few years. Ever since my freshman year in college, I have had issues. It all started when I oversang my first two years of college in voice lessons and in choir. I was also trying to belt too much which is not a natural capability of my voice. I have more of a soft and gentle high voice. So after all of that, I developed a module which really affected my low voice and mid range. I was singing very airy and my vocal cords were not coming together properly. After some time, the nodule went away but my vocal cords continued to not fully close due to a small callus left in the place of the nodule. I went to the voice doctor and found out I also had severe acid reflux. I had no idea until then. I have been taking my medicine consistently for about a year and a half and have finally received my low voice back where I don't sound airy anymore. The problem is, now I don't have a high voice anymore. As soon as I get to my mid range, my voice starts to shake and sounds like two pitches at once. I can then sing higher notes until finally it starts to do it again at the top of my voice. I am so frustrated. All I wanted was to finally get my low voice back and now I have lost my high voice. I am not really sure what to do. I can't rest my voice because I am a music therapist and sing all day. Does anybody with professional experience have any advice?

  • Answer:

If you have been diagnosed as having acid reflux - Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease [GERD} then the Doctor would also have told you that the acid is causing damage to your vocal ligaments and you should not be singing. If you have been given medication to keep the acid down then that is another reason to stop the singing. GERD can cause vocal fatigue, Voice breaks, dysphonia, Excessive clearing of mucous, post nasal drip, nodules - I could go on and on. A small operation can cure this completely and you will have your voice back within a few weeks. Remember the acid is just like battery acid in a car battery and will be burning the soft tissue of the larynx. Please, please stop singing and go to a good ENT Specialist

Sirens. I'm not sure if you know what they are, I'm gonna assume you don't, but if you do, then good :P Say the word "sing" and hold that "ng" sound at the end of the word. Siren over the parts of your voice that you're having trouble with to get your voice used to singing that again. It's probably having trouble because of a changed attractor state. For long term treatment, I'd highly recommend looking into finding a singing teacher who is Estill qualified, if you haven't already.
