I'm a 3D Character Modeler for Next Gen games. It's extremely hard and difficult, even more difficult than any school for this will ever dare to tell you. There are a few jobs in the video game companies that you may be interested in with your future, rarely do people in the industry get to be the sole designer of their characters or concepts. Each artist can put little things in that are their own decisions, but essentially the beginning is with a Concept artist being told what kind of character would be the most interesting, with a full description. After that, the concept artist then draws as fast as he or she can, and tries to draw what was explained to them in multiple different styles or ideas. (If you want to be a concept artist, you must learn how to draw incredibly FAST, for example a full person with clothes in under ten minutes. The better concept artists I have seen are 3 minutes and shaded.) Then the art director decides on what concept to go with and the picture will usually go to a character modeler, who takes the drawing and creates it to a 3D work with some alterations to ideas in order to ensure it is more pleasing and interesting in 3D--because sometimes not everything translates well. After that, it goes to a rigger or animator, depending on who you work for (sometimes animators are riggers) and they make the character move. I know that may seem complicated, but to put it simply, no job will grant you total control over YOUR OWN character. A single character in a video game can go through many hands, with many changes, making it no singular person's character....unless you're the next Sze Jones and a company says "make a character because you're awesome". Do your research and look up 'video game pipelines' as a start, there should be a lot of overviews of what each individual job does. After that, if you see a job you would like, such as concept artist, then you can find online communtiies like conceptart.org, and look up tutorials or small lessons that you can learn things from. After that, do not be afraid to email some of your favorite artists and ask them questions. Many people who work in the industry are entirely flattered to answer questions, and they all work hard because they are very passionate, so talking to someone else who is equally as interested as they are makes them excited. I'm not going to kid you though--it's very rewarding but it's probably one of the hardest professions you can do: you work just as hard as a doctor, and in some cases learn more about the human body than a doctor would, you have to obsess about being THE best, and you have to learn to operate with minimal hours of sleep. It's a lot of work, but the pleasure you get from working hard on this sort of thing makes it worth it.
