BFA graduate, cannot find a job.?
-
I'm so depressed. I graduated from my University a year ago, in a rapidly expanding field that I thought I would have no trouble finding a job in. I focused hard like my parents and teachers had told me, got to the grind for a high GPA, except now I have nothing to show for it: all I did was school, while I was in school. I didn't go out to drink and party, so I now have no social networking...despite thinking at the time that this was so much more the 'responsible thing to do'. I didn't find any job opportunities on the side, because I wanted to focus on work that now everywhere I apply requires some sort of 2-5 year industry experience, but I don't even have ANY job experience because I was too busy getting that perfect 4.0. I feel like University was a scam and after five years of working hard and paying up absurd amounts of cash, I'm back home with my parents and competing with high school kids for the same dead-end retail jobs. I can't even sign up for the military because believe it or not they're laying people off now, too. I started looking at other countries for my job hunt in hopes of finding somewhere that lacks people trained in the same field I'm in, yet desperately needs them. None of my friends who graduated at the same time have found jobs either, at first I thought they were just being lazy, but there really doesn't seem to be any jobs for us. It's been taking a severe toll on my self esteem, and I decided to go back for my Master's after a year of no luck finding a job, but I can't help but feel even that is a futile and complete waste of time. I thought I would be planning my family by now, living on my own, with a pet and a half and self sufficient...but instead I'm the 26 year old living at home with my parents and three other siblings who went to school and can't find jobs either, and too 'over qualified' to work retail (managers don't like many grads working with them because they do not want their job to be the next target) How come now that I've worked so hard to take everyone's advice, work hard, get good grades, why am I the one who's screwed? Will this ever get better? What places will take me now with a degree and virtually no work experience? Is it a mistake to go back for my MFA because I cannot find a job with my BFA?

Answer:
If you can't find a proper job, go on a graduate programme. Big companies hire graduates who become trainees in their chosen field. You may get paid a little but it's not about the money, it's about experience. Volunteering looks great on your CV too. Spend some time getting experience then look for your dream job. Good luck.
