How to become a Certified Nurse Midwife?

What are the steps to becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife?

  • I really want to be one but I need to know how to become a certified nurse midwife and how long it will take to get there.

  • Answer:

In the United States, you first need to get your RN license, which is a minimum of an Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) but eventually (if not right away) you will want to complete the full Bachelor of Science or Arts in Nursing (BSN/BAN). Once you have a year's worth of experience working in Labor & Delivery, you can apply to graduate school to earn you Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus in CNM, and upon graduation take a certification exam to be able to use the title of CNM. Right now the minimum education for CNM is the MSN, but there is progress towards changing the minimum degree to a full Doctorate of Nursing Practice, which is another 2-3 years beyond the MSN. Some programs have created a BSN to DNP bridge program which skips about a year's worth of the MSN level courses. It's a long road. Good luck.
