What is theoretical foundation in nursing?

What is a clinical nusing course?

  • There's a nurse extern position posted and in the description, it says: "Must be currently enrolled in a professional school of nursing and have completed two clinical nursing courses. (At least one foundation of nursing course and one medical-surgical nursing course.) " What do they mean? What is a foundation of nursing course? We had a med-surg clinical for our first clinicals. Is foundation of nursing the same as nursing fundamentals? The nursing fundamentals class talked about the history and basics of nursing but it wasn't associated with a clinical. The next clinical is "adult health issues."

  • Answer:

Basically what it's saying is you need to have completed the first half of your nursing program. Each semester contains one clinical course where you have been in a clinical (hospital, nursing home, clinic, etc.) setting at least one day per week and taken care of patients. Foundation courses are essentially always the first classes you take which like you talked about, discuss the history and role and basics of nursing. Nursing internships are almost always designed for people who have completed the first two semesters of a typical 4 semester program (regardless if ADN or BSN). If you are not sure, call the hospital's HR department and ask them to clarify and if your courses will meet their requirement.
