What Was Little Jimmy's Nickname?

What's with this business of Kate being a nickname?

  • Not only as a nickname, but a nickname for Katherine, no less. Now, this confuses me. I've never thought of Kate as a nickname for Katherine - it doesn't even fit the name! I've met about 6 Kates in total, and only one of them was as a nickname for Kathryn. The others were their full names. So it annoys me when people say Kate should not be used as a full name, as it is only a nickname. Now that that's off my chest, here are my actual questions: 1. Do you prefer Kate as a full name or a nickname? 2. How many Kates do you know? How many of them are as their full name, and how many of them are as a nickname? Please include their full names. 3. If someone introduces themselves as Kate, do you assume that it is a nickname, or their full name? 4. What is your own personal opinion about Kate being used as a nickname for Katherine?

  • Answer:

Well firstly, Kate's historically short for Katherine, but original usage has never stopped people from using a diminutive form of a name as a full given name before, such as Meghan for Margaret. I'm not sure what you mean about it not fitting the name either (-th sounds were once pronounced like "t", think about how Thomas is pronounced). People have been naming their children "nicknames" for decades and longer so I don't see a problem with diminutive forms as full names; early 20th century saw many, many Willies and Joes. Now that that's off my chest... ;) 1. I think that Kate works well enough on its own, though I do often like longer names that are more versatile and offer up a wealth of possibilities for usage, like Margaret "Maggie"/"Meta"/"Maisie"/etc. 2. I don't really know many Kates, though I've known a Kathleen, a Kat, and several Katies (most I believe were short for Katherine) 3. I would assume Kate was short for something, though I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't. 4. I think Kate as a nickname for Katherine is fine. Neither are really my favorite. I prefer Catherine "Cat" or "Kitty", but even then it's not my favorite. :D

1. I think Kate is fine either way. I don't mind it as a nickname, but it's nice as a full name too. 2. I can think of seven Kate's that I know. Five of them are nicknames for Katherine, one is Kathleen, and one is Katelyn. I don't think I know anyone whose full name is Kate, but I do known a Mary-Kate. 3. I would assume Kate was their nickname 4. In the US where I live, Kate is pretty common as a nickname for Katherine, so I don't really notice it. It doesn't bother me personally and I like it better than Kathy.

1. I prefer it as both a nickname and a full name as it honestly doesn't phase me either way. 2. I know 3 women who go by Kate. 1 actual Kate, 1 Katherine and 1 Katrina. 3. I assume that it's a full name. 4. Kate as a nickname for Katherine is perfectly fine. However, I see it as a stand-alone name just as much as a nickname because it can be either. And it can be either because, to put it simply, Kate isn't cute. Kate is very prim, proper and sophisticated. It also ages extremely well, as opposed to more popular nicknames such as Lucy instead of Lucille, Milly instead of Mildred/Millicent, Tori instead of Victoria etc. I see Kate as both a nickname (for that is its origin, just as Harry is from Henry) and its own personal name because its mature.

1. I like it as a nickname and for a full name. I don't mind which. 2. 1 Kate, 1 Katrina "Kate" 3. Usually it's their full name for me if they include surname as well. I'd probably ask them though. 4. All in all, I quite like it as a nickname for Katherine, even though Kathy would be a better nickname wouldn't it?

To me, Kate is a nickname, and not a full name. The fact that bout names start with "kat" make it a pretty obvious nickname, although I do hear Katie a lot for Katherine. I personally know three Kates. One is short for Kaitlyn, and two are short for Kathleen. I would assume it's a nickname. I love Kate as a nickname for Katherine. I would use it as a nickname for Katherine.

1. Kate is a nickname. 2. I've known quite a few Kates (and a bunch of Katie's) in my life, and none of them have ever had Kate as their full name. All were Katherine or Kathleen or occassionally Kaitlyn. (Or various spellings thereof.) 3. I would assume that it's a nickname. 4. Not my favorite, (I prefer Kat if the name will be shortened, but I generally prefer the full version), but it's not for me to decide what other people call themselves or their children.

1. Do you prefer Kate as a full name or a nickname? - I don't mind it at all. It works either way. However the only Kate I knew was way back in Primary school; 2. How many Kates do you know? How many of them are as their full name, and how many of them are as a nickname? Please include their full names. - I only knew one Kate and it was her full name. The only time I have heard the nickname Kate for Catherine/Katherine was when Catherine "Kate" Middleton had her limelight last year. Otherwise, the Katherine I knew had a nickname "Kat" (didn't stick, only very close friends called her that but not often) and the Catherine I knew had a nickname Cathy. 3. If someone introduces themselves as Kate, do you assume that it is a nickname, or their full name? - I would assume it was their full name. It was only starting uni this year where I noticed that people introduced themselves by their preferred nickname or name. This beautiful girl I met introduced herself as Layla but I only recently found out that her full name was Olivia. But naturally, where I live, I would assume Kate was a first name. 4. What is your own personal opinion about Kate being used as a nickname for Katherine? - It's quite nice actually. Although I would think that it doesn't stick. It's sort of hip, just like Catherine Middleton, the name made her appear very young and cool in the media other than being posh and elegant. However, I liked the nickname Cathy or Kathy for Catherine/Katherine. It's traditional! I do recall the nickname even being used in Wuthering Heights? Although it's vague in my memory. :)

1. I prefer it as a nickname. I've never seen the point of this fad for naming children with pet names. Not only is it not dignified, but if you give your child the name Catherine/Katherine, she can be Kate, Katie, Kat, Kitty or Cathy, as she likes; but if you give her the name Kate, she has no options at all. 2. I only know one Kate, and her full name is Catherine. 3. If I met someone called Kate I would certainly assume that it was a pet name. 4. I think it's an excellent pet form for a Catherine/Katherine. So are all the other possible pet forms, which is one reason Catherine/Katherine is such a good name; it gives choices.

1. One of my daughters is Kate as a full name. I like it as either and think it can be both. Like many other names which started off as nicknames but are now often seen as standalone names in their own right - Greta, Gina, Eliza, Adele, Ella, Millie and Molly to name a few - I think it's established enough to be a full name. 2. I know 6 Kates. Two are just Kate, one is Kathleen, one is Kathryn, two are Katherine. 3. I usually assume their full name is Katherine simply because it's more common - but if somebody tells me their name is Kate, I take their cue to call them Kate and don't worry what it might be short for. 4. I think it's ace and fine and there are far more unusual things out there than to be called Kate as a full name!

La Comtesse DeSpair

1. I prefer it as a nickname (however, most of my favorite first names are 9 letters or more so..) 2. 4- 2 nicknames, 2 full names. (The two people with Kate as a nickname are called Katie) 3. Full name I suppose. Most people I know introduce themselves with something along the lines of "Hi, my name is ____ but you can call me ___" anyway. 4. I think it's a cute nickname for Katherine. :)
