Change your name for free in the UK?

To change your name in the UK, do you have to be a UK citizen?

  • ...Or is it enough that I'm a EU (European Union) citizen? I just got divorced, but I immigrated from Germany and unfortunately I can't go back there just to change my name back to my maiden name, so I was wondering if it's possible to do it here. I still have my German passport, it's universal and so I have no need for an English one.

  • Answer:

Technically, since any EU citizen is allowed to live anywhere in Europe, there should definitely be a way for you to legally change your name. However, since in Germany it's impossible to legally change your name in general, Germany will probably decide to veto the whole thing once they find out, thus making it impossible for you to change your name without giving up German citizenship or at least obtaining an UK passport. I recommend you to get an English passport anyway, no matter if you end up going through with this or not, that way there won't be any issues like this in the future.

Wel the uk authorities won't issue you a new passport. You'd have to do that either from Home or through your embassy. But of course you can call yourself what you like!
