Should I quit my school's Martial Arts Club?
-
I'm a college sophomore and I'm currently the treasurer of the Martial Arts Club. I joined because I had taken Taekwondo when I was younger for a few years prior to moving to a new home and leaving the dojo. I wanted to join the Martial Arts Club because I wanted to get involved in something, and I was good at Taekwondo. When I was a freshman, the club had so few members, that I was immediately made treasurer for this year (I didn't really want to be honestly). But should I quit? While I like the members, there have been a few issues I have with the club. I feel like an outcast in that I don't really like participating in the events (I'm a relatively shy person). I only wanted to join to take the Karate classes and that's it. Some of their events involve doing "self-defense" seminars in public places (like in the school quad where people passing by can see), performing in shows, or wearing our gi's in public for a fundraiser event. Point is, I just like learning martial arts, not doing things in public and making an a** out of myself. Unlike the rest of the club, who seem to take pride in doing these things. The club is so small, that I'm often forced to take part in these events. Lastly, while the members are nice, they seem to be so traditional. None of them are fans of mixed martial arts (I am a huge fan). They are so caught up in their own style; the way they talk sometimes, they seem almost ignorant. I'm more open to the ideas of hybrid fighting styles and using what actually works. The karate class I'm in right now (my friend is the teacher of this class and president of the club) teaches mostly forms and does point-sparring (both of which I am really not a fan of). For me, I like hitting pads/bags and I like continuous full-contact sparring. Right now, the club is performing in a culture show in about a week, and I said that I wasn't interested in being on stage. However, even though I'm not performing, they're making me go anyway to wear a gi, bow in, and move mats. I like learning self-defense, but I don't like these events. I feel like I think so differently from the other club members. I had a friend who was in the club who quit because he was like me in a way, where he just wanted to learn and not be involved in all these somewhat embarrassing events. I'm conflicted as to whether I should leave or not, because I like martial arts, and it would be hard for them to get another treasurer. What should I do, I'm more into mixed martial arts than I am with traditional styles. Plus, I don't like these events. Should I just quit? I'm so conflicted right now...

Answer:
Personally man, I'm just like you. I love martial arts and i love MMA also. I love live sparing and hitting bags and full contact, but i would hate doing all those public things. It seems everyone else in that club is very traditional conpared to you. And I personally would feel like you're feeling right now. I would quit and say it isn't working out, I wouldn't care who is disappointed as long as it saves me from feeling uncomfortable. You're doing it for yourself not for other people out in public. Quit, but do it respectfully and just join another gym outside of school.

You should just talk to the President and say "Either I'm going to opt out of all these public events you wish to perform, or I'm going to leave and you're going to have to find another treasurer". So basically it's giving him a compromise. If they want a treasurer badly enough, they'll let you opt out of those club events you don't want to attend. If you aren't satisfied with that, then you can quit. But if you make a deal, stick to it. Otherwise sayonnara. Clubs in Japanese high schools are essentially student run functions. Teachers are allowed participation but often times only as guidance, not as the official authority for all club events. That is done by selecting a senior student as president of the club. Or Taichou, the Japanese title similar to Captain. The smaller the club, the more say individual members have, even the junior ones. Entering a new social circle is always strange at first, especially ones belonging to a different cultural matrix than yours.

Damn, im in the somewhat same position ur in except im a Sophmore in High school haha! Anyway i ve done Tae Kwon Do for 5 years and i still didnt want to perform in front of large amounts of people. So i was upfront with the club leader and said "HEY, i dont wanna do any of that public ****!' and he was all "OK' and that was it! You should do the same!

Don't be embarrased to do these things . You enjoy martial arts and so do they . The whole point of the club is that fact. You do what they want you to do for a little while and they might consider whatever you want more seriously.
