Can you recommend me some jobs?

Can anyone recommend any good part time jobs for actors?

  • Like most of the acting community, I need a part time job to keep myself a float when I don't have an acting job. I currently have a weekend job at a Starbucks store which bores the hell out of me. I dislike the people I work with and after three years there I find I have saturated in my role and desperately need something new. Does anyone have any suggestions of part time, flexible jobs that pay fairly well and don't get terribly in way of your acting career? I wouldn't mind waitressing or working as an usher. The only good thing about my job at the moment is that I work the exact same shifts every weekend so I can easily plan around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Hazel.

Most of the actors I know have free-lance jobs which they do self-employed, so it leaves them free to take time off for the occasional acting job, rehearsals, auditions, etc. They have such jobs as eBay traders, aromatherapists, proof-readers, children’s entertainers, photographers, copy-editors, writers, website designers, hairdressers, chiropodists, drama teachers, singing teachers, cartographers, jewellery-makers, ceramics workers, researchers, kids’ tutors, dance instructors, personal trainers, etc. At least then they don't keep getting fired for throwing sickies or asking for time off at inconvenient moments!

Any job where you can work by the hours and change scheme regarding how youre primare work scheduale is would do. Works could be serving at bars and resturants, working in the garderobe theathres (great for presenting youreselfs as relaible and thrustworthly person for them) working at gyms and cashier works at shops and casinos. And since youre an enterteiner per se just about any work within the entertein industry (comersials, tv shows, enterteinment parks, singing servants at dinner reasturants etc) would do. Just think outside the box and be flexible. Johan.

Waitstaff is a good option. They're usually reasonably flexible and if you're good at it, you can get good tips. Not to mention, it's a little like acting. When I've been a waitress, I had to appear to really like those folks I was serving. I was performing. I schmoozed them to get my paycheck from them. Because of a theatrical background, I was able to memorize the specials, no problem. If I had a bad personal day, didn't matter, I still had to smile and be friendly and helpful (using the same skills I've used to get into character).

Are you any good at writing? I mean try writing and getting published. There's an extra couple bucks and you can write on your own time. Do you have a degree? Why not go to college for theatre or film and you can stay in a dorm and touch up on your skills - not to mention it will help with your resume? An usher sounds like a good idea, but as you probably know jobs are tight. Maybe you could get a job cleaning at a studio - hey at least you are around what you love.
