What is the difference between a limited and full warranty?
-
I'm getting a certified Honda and would like all info I can get before buying. When it comes to warrantys, what is the difference between a full and limited? Also, what is a power train warranty? I don't want to be talked to any warranty I won't need. Any info would be great!

Answer:
The title of the thing doesn't matter as much as what is actually written in the contract. Nobody actually gives a "full" warranty any more. Even the warranties given by the manufacturer on a brand new car have limits. Don't buy all the crap the salesman is pitching. Read the contract to understand what is being offered.

A full warranty covers everything, tires, entire, paint, etc. As long as the damage isn't a result of negligence, it's covered. A limited warranty covers specific items or specific conditions, so a "life time limited" warranty might cover the brakes, suspension, etc for 50K miles, a the power train for as long as you own the car. The other limitation might be service. I bought a car with a lifetime warranty on the engine, but I have to get the oil changed and the engine serviced at specified intervals. If I don't, the warranty is voided. And power train is engine and transmission.

Rule #1 - DO NOT PAY for a warranty. They aren't worth the cost. If the Honda dealer is selling your a Certified Pre Owned Honda then it will come a factory warranty, just like a new car does. This is the ONLY warranty worth having. Extended warranties and 3rd party service plans are not worth the money you pay for them. A Limited Warranty is exactly what it says it is. It is limited. The warranty only covers certain components. The saleman should have documentatin that explains exactly what is and isn't covered by a limited warranty plan. A Full Warranty is just that, it covers EVERYTHING. Just like a brand new car warranty. A Powertrain Warranty covers the engine and transmission only. Ask the Honda salesman for the details, make sure you understand exactly what it is you are getting/buying and exactly what it covers and doesn't. Get it in writing. I bought a CPO Honda Accord in January and I got a 1 year full coverage warranty and 3 years powertrain coverage.

ALL warranties are limited and have restrictions. There is no such thing as a "full warranty" on cars. There are ALWAYS restrictions even if you buy an extended warranty that may cover some additional items over the manufacturer's warranty. Of course, any warranty requires you maintain your car according to the rules in your warranty agreement. Powertrain warranties cover the engine, transmission, and other major components that help power the wheels of the car. Powertrain warranties are usually for longer terms than general or "bumper-to-bumper" warranties. Don't let dealer F&I managers (the guys in the back office) sell you extended warranties on a brand new car, especially on highly reliable cars such as Honda. They make extra profit on these "back office" sales, often more profit than on the car sale itself.
