They assassin just spared a little girl and her families lives, but they think he is still trying to kill them. The count, who wasn’t sure if the assassin was planning to kill them and he had just been lying before, ordered, “Take him to the dungeon. I think he is the one who has been killing the king’s nobles. If he is we will need to execute him. We will hang him tomorrow.” The guards dragged him out. He struggled until he got a knifed pressed to hard against his throat he stopped resisting. They threw him in a pitch black cell that stank of dead animals. It was cold and damp. They stripped him of most of his clothes, and all his weapons. There was a very small hole where he could look out and barely see the moon. After he was sure the guards were gone, he whistled softly for Star. After a few moments the Friesian trotted up and neighed. She lay down and ran her hoof along the ground as if trying to dig him out. She stayed there all night. A few hours before dawn, the assassin heard the door of the dungeon open and soft footsteps coming in his direction. His eyes had somewhat adapted to the darkness and he saw the girl rushing toward him in the darkness. She had a small unlit lantern in her right hand. She lit the lantern and held it up to the bars of the cell. He glared at her and sneered, “I spared your life and this is the thanks I get!” She sighed and looked at him apologetically saying, “It all happened so fast. I…” He interrupted her by shooting his hand through the bars and grasping her throat. “They are going to kill me!” His large hand gripped her thin neck, and he knew he could snap it like a twig. She clawed at his hand, but he held on just as tight. The dungeon door swung open and he released her neck and moved to the back of the cell. The girl collapsed to the floor gasping for air. The guard walked in and helped her to her feet. The assassin knew she was going to say he tried to kill her and he didn’t care. The guard asked her what happened. She glanced back at the assassin who was sitting in the corner with his hood over his eyes. He always wore his hood out of habit. “What happened? Did he hurt you?” The guard looked ready to slit the assassin’s throat. It appeared he genuinely cared for the girl. The girl, still trying to catch her breath, when she replied, “No… No I’m okay. I was…uh choking on something and he helped me get it out of my throat.” The assassin looked up from his corner, his eyes locking with the young girl’s. The guard nodded and walked out. The assassin looked away, waiting for the girl to leave, but she didn’t. She walked over and placed her hands on the steel bars and stared at him. He looked back up and her, looking into her eyes, wondering what she thought of him. The only looks he had ever gotten were looks of terror and hatred. His master looked at him like he was a chess piece. Tiranis could move him any way he wanted too. The assassin was merely a piece in the game and would eventually get thrown away. In her eyes, he saw, sadness, compassion, kindness…he hated her for it. Compassion and kindness are weaknesses. He felt uncomfortable as the girl stared into his eyes as if looking into his soul. He looked away again. He didn’t understand her actions. He wanted her to hate him for choking her. He heard her moving away, and sighed with relief. For the first time, he noticed his arm and wrist were bleeding heavily. He had nothing to stop the blood, but then what was the point? If he didn’t bleed to death in this cell, he would just be hung in morning. He had faced death before, but this time it was more real in a way. He had known his master would probably not kill him. He was too valuable. But now… The girl came back something clinking in her hand and something draped over her shoulders. The clinking sound was made by keys; she pushed the key into the lock and flinched as it creaked loudly. She had a moment of struggle, when the key stuck in the lock, but she got the door open. She grabbed what was draped over her shoulder and handed it to him. It was a bundle of his clothes and weapons. She handed the bundle to him and stepped out of his way. A few days ago he would have shoved past her, and run. Ever since he met Christina his thoughts and emotions have all been twisted around and changed. He reached for her hand and was surprised when she didn’t pull away. He held her tiny smooth hand in his large rough, scared hands. He pressed his lips quickly against her hand and rushed out of the dungeon and outside.

Answer:
All cases of cheesiness can be solved through purple prose. Make everything more dramatic, more exciting, make the characters more realistic—and no one notices that it's cheesy.

I like it. I also like the phrase "piece in his game" however it is popularly known as being a line in the hunger games so I would be careful how much you use it.
