Answer:
I also thought they were expensive... and I tried the trial version and had some problems with it. I looked around for other softwares on the market and tried all the trials I could find and read a bunch of reviews to find the best one. I finally got Ouino French and I am really glad I did! I am learning very fast finally! http://ouinofrench.com is the website Bonne chance! hope this helps!

Rosetta Stone is far too expensive for what you get - avoid it. I started French with a course that cost about £25 - 4CDs and a coursebook, [Hugo French in 3 months] though naturally I had to buy a dictionary as well [but then a cheap one is good enough when you're starting, about £5-£8]. However, before spending anything I'd suggest you try a free and reliable online course - go to www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french there's audio material, beginners'help, learning tips etc.

Hey Ha, Lots of experience with French here so I should be able to help you out. For starters, the best way to learn a language.... is to speak it. And this is a tool that most beginners don't have - access to real live French speaking people! So you have actually the best tool at your advantage, all for the low low cost of $0.00!!! There's some other good tools though, and I'll set you up with a few. Learn French: http://learnfrench.languagelearneronline.com/ Best of luck to you mate =)

While I don't have any experience with Rosetta Stone or other language software, my recommendation would be to take private lessons, preferably with a native speaker. While I realize the cost may be prohibitive, I think that would be the best way to get started. Once or twice a week should suffice. Then, once you have enough vocabulary and a sufficient command of grammar to begin attempting to speak, I would join a French conversation group (which wouldn't necessarily have to cost any money). If you live in or near a large city or university campus, odds are such groups exist and meet in your area. I would recommend meetup.com to look into this. The ideal, of course, would be immersion. A stay in France would do wonders for your command of the language. If that is an option, I would recommend somewhere other than Paris, since there are many English-speakers and expatriates there, which could possibly defeat the purpose. I hope this helps; best of luck to you.
