How to simplify expressions?

How do you simplify log expressions?

  • Can anyone explain how simply log expressions? Are you supposed to group them together? Example if you have the problem of: logM + 3logN + 2logP How would you simplify it?

  • Answer:

You can do as you say and group logs together, you just have to know the correct rule to use. Here are a few: i)log(ab) = loga +logb ii)log(a/b) = loga -logb iii)log (a^b) = b*loga So for you example use rule iii): logM + 3logN + 2logP = logM +log(N^3) +log(P^2) then rule i): logM + 3logN + 2logP = log(M(N^3)(P^2)) to simplify your expression.

Use the properties of logs 1) logA + logB = log(AB) 2) B logA = log(A^B) log(MN^3P^2)
