  • Answer:

To convert decimal feet to inches, or vice versa think in terms of equivalent fractions, depending on the number of decimal places used ... The rule is to convert to an improper fraction first, then divide by the original denominator. Multiply by new denominator for the answer ... For example, for decimal to inches ... 4.6 ft = 4 6/10 ft 4 6/10 = 4 x 10 + 6 = 40 + 6 = 46 46 divided by 12 = 3 + 10/12 or 3'10" In reverse, for inches to decimal ... 3'10" = 3 + 10/12 = 36 + 10 = 46 46 divided by 10 = 4.6 *** If the answers were to two decimal places, the division or multiplication would be by 100, not 10 ...

Use the CONVERT function. Say you have 2.5 in one cell (which you know is 2 feet 6 inches) Use this where you want your result: =VALUE(LEFT(A2,FIND(".",A2,1)-1))&" feet "&(CONVERT(MOD(A2,1),"ft","in")&" inches") As for converting the other way. If you put feet in one cell, and inches in another, use this: =A2&TEXT(CONVERT(B2,"in","ft"), ".#")&" feet" where A2 is Feet and B2 is inches. The reason for the TEXT function is to make Excel format is so you won't see 20.5 (for 2 feet, 6 inche) since 2 and 0.5 would be the result otherwise. TEXT forces the format so it appears as 2.5. If you want more than 1 decimal place, add more #'s to the formula.
