How to make my customers happy?

How do I make small talk with my customers?

  • I work at my local Arby's and my General Manager says that I'm to quiet and that I need to make small talk with customers so that they keep coming. It even says in my training book thing that I quote 'Is very quiet but does a great job' in the notes section. I'm a very shy person and I get hesitant and nervous when talking to customers. I mostly say 'Hi' and 'How're you?' and answer them if they ask me back and I always say 'Have a good day afterwards'. But I guess my manager wants me to have full on conversations with them. So how do I got about making small talk?

  • Answer:

im not sure what arbys is.. but for retail stores or something similar, try hello , how are you can i help you with anything in particular, have you found everything you need? if all else fails and they dont ask anything back, then just assume they dont need help, and say have a nice day like you already do :) dont feel embarrassed or shy about saying things because that will make the person feel awkward talking to you. so just try to ACT confident, in a nice way, and they will feel confident with asking you things :)

If you really say what you claim you say, then that is usually sufficient. However, "HI" is a little too informal unless it is a customer you actually know (a regular customer). Customers waiting in line often get irritated if the cashier appears to be having an actual conversation with the customer currently being served

Observe them and see if there's anything you can relate to and strike a conversation from there. E.g. If they're wearing/using something nice/unique or you happen to like their style or if they look happy/tired/troubled etc Most importantly, show genuine concern and interest in them :)
