Do transfer credits count towards GPA?

Can you choose which credits to transfer to university? Do AP credits count as transfer credits?

  • Hi, I'll be trying to transfer out of community college to the University of Michigan or New York University for Fall Semester of 2013. My GPA should be fine, as I anticipate winding up with between a 3.85 and a 3.92, depending on how my grades are finalized this semester. In the case that I wind up having more transferable credits than 60, which seems to the max for Michigan, NYU, and most other 4-year universities, can I pick and choose which classes to carry over? For example, I'm double-majoring in physics and psychology, but have taken several courses that are irrelevant to either major. I would much prefer to carry over Calculus II or Calculus III than my archaeology class, though I won't be taking Calc III until the same semester I enter my transfer application. Thanks.

  • Answer:

You must submit your whole CC transcript. The four year college you go to decides how many credits they will accept and which classes they will accept for transfer. You have no say in the matter.

your entire transcript is sent--you don't get to pick and choose. The new university will pick and choose which transfer and what will not. It's most likely that some courses will not transfer. and even if all do course equivalent wise (so you won't have to retake calc 2 because they didnt like your CC calc 2 course for whatever reason) and you're still over 60 credits, they will just cap them all at 60 credits being transferred. AP credits count as AP credits, not transfer credits. You may be asked to send your scores from the AP company directly to your university.
