How to convince my parents to let me get a Ferret? and questions?

  • So, I decided I want to get a pet Ferret. I haven't asked my parents about it yet so I'm not sure of their reactions. I don't want to ask them yet, until I know I can convince them properly. I already own two male guinea pigs and a dog. I have the guinea pigs in my room and the ferret will most likely be in my room as well. I'm getting a report card soon and I'm positive I'll bring home good grades. My last grade in gym was a D because I never change, but this time I think im getting a A. Maybe that will help as well. I also have a Ferret care book so I'm learning the proper care of one. I will only be getting one but I will play with it daily for at least 4-5 hours. I will never really have it in its cage. :D How can I convince them?! Any tips. :) I really want one so bad. Questions: Do you think my room will smell bad if I have two guinea pigs and a ferret in there? I clean out the guinea pig cages daily. They both have C&C cages and I have fleece in there. I completely clean their cages daily. When the ferret is here, I will be cleaning its litter box daily and changing the fleece daily as well. I will bath it only every 2-3 months or when she smells really bad. Male or female ferret? I heard no matter if a male is neutered and de-scented it still smells a little bit. I was thinking a female. Do female ferrets make good pets and are they grumpy? :)

  • Answer:

Research research research! Join a few ferret forums and talk to ferret owners. The more you know, the more prepared you will be. Get a part time job or do some odd jobs to save up some money. A surgery for a blockage in a ferret can easily run $1000. I don't think your room would smell bad with animals in there if you keep it clean but keep the ferret away from the pigges. Rodents are a ferret's natural prey and it would be horrible if they got attacked. Bathing would just make your ferret smell worse. It strips the skin of oils and the skin glands overproduce to compensate. They really only need to be bathed 1-2 times a year- when they get into something dirty. Letting them play in a rice box is a really good way to absorb some of the oils, but not strip them completely. I have all males. I don't think they smell but I also manage them properly like you said above. Un-neutered males will smell strong but all pet store ferrets in the US are already altered. Descenting does nothing for general odor BTW, it only removes the ability to "poof" like a ferret fart. I've heard female ferrets are more independant and tenacious but really it depends on the individual ferret. -Also, you should NOT be going through 7lbs of food in a few days! That's crazy! The only way that would happen would be if you are feeding a low quality food. Ferrets cannot digest fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, sugars, and milk products so these items just pass through. Ferrets will have to eat more of low quality foods (full of these bad items) to get the nutrition they need. I have 3 ferrets and go through 9 pounds of food in 2+ months! tell your parents that it is for a school project about taking care of ferrets. probably will stink. male female ferrets are less aggressive unless it has kids.

im a very very very happy owner of 2 amazing ferrets, i had to even convince myself to get them but from trial and error heres what i learned, ferrets make very good pets, they can be trained if you take the time, they can learn tricks and even come when you call their name, as for the smell... females tend to have less odor i would try looking for one that has been fixed and descented, this doesnt take away all the smell, make sure you bathe them every week with a special ferret shampoo and as far as them and the cage i use pellet bedding, this is AMAZING stuff, i tried just using other litters with no luck it still stunk, but as soon as i put this pellet bedding in the bottom of the cage you cant even tell i have ferrets the cage and even the ferrets dont smell at all, the only smell they have is the same smell as the bedding, care for ferrets isnt to diffucult make sure they have constant access to freash water and food at all times they have a very high metobolism and will dehydrate or starve very easily, they eat ALOT of food so be prepared i go thru 7 pounds of food in a few days, but the thing is ferrets are way easier to take care of when you have at least to otherwise ull b on ur toes non stop trying to keep up with the excercise they need, this way they can kinda ware eachother out to, they also like digging i put white rice in a storage bin and let them dig in there all the time this helps waste some energy and be VERY VERY careful they can squeeze thru TINY TINY places. all i can tell you for the parent part is do your research present them with the research to prove you know what your talking about and i would also make a written weekly schedule on their care. good luck!!! ferrets are awesome pets!!!! the reward is well worth the investment.
