How do I set up tumblr to my phone?

If I were to buy a "Smart Phone" online would I be able to set it my current cell phone # at home?

I currently have a basic phone on Verizon & I really hate this phone but I'm not eligible for an upgrade. So if I were to buy a smart phone online from a website such as E-bay would I be able to set it to my current phone number and transfer my contacts by myself? I wouldn't be opposed to going into Best Buy to get my number changed as long as it doesn't cost me anything. Also if I were to buy a smart phone online would I have to set up a data plan? Or since I bought it online could I just use Wifi from my house without Verizon knowing? HELP!
Answer:

You would need a Verizon -branded phone with a clean ESN and you would have to add a smart phone data plan or Verizon will refuse to activate the phone. You can activate it yourself at home for free. There will be a charge if you bring it in to Verizon. Best Buy will not help you since you didn't buy the phone from them.
