Free texting app for iphone or android phones?

Okay well my friend told me that if you have either an iphone or android phone you can get a free app which will let you text anyone else who also has an iphone or android phone, for free, even if they are in another country. I'm just wondering if this is true? Does anyone know of an app that lets you do this?
Answer:

iPhone has iMessage with the latest iOS. As long as whoever you're texting has iMessage switched on then you only get charged whatever data it uses. There are other apps which again the person you are texting must have activated for it to work. It's not technically free because you are getting charged for the Internet usage but it is a lot cheaper.
