What Is My Ip Address?

What is my IP address for a remote desktop connection?

  • I know how to find out my IP address (what's my ip address) but all my computers on my network have that same IP address. I'm looking to give someone control to my computer via Remote Desktop Connection but don't know my individual computer's IP address because I'm on a wireless network.

  • Answer:

If both of you are using windows 7 or Vista, just use the built in remote desktop with windows Click start and type "windows remote assistance" click on it and follow the instructions.

This is what Port Forwarding is for. All of your computers do have the same external ip address, so you need to tell the router, when someone tries to connect to you using RDP, send the requires to a specific computer. On the computer you want to have them connect to, go to Start > Run, type cmd, hit enter, type ipconfig, hit enter. Find your ip address in this list. Then, you'll need to log into your router and tell it to do Port Forwarding. Configure it so that it forwards port 3389 to the ip address you just found. Then, give the person the same external ip address that you already found, and they will be able to connect.
