How to install a CB in a car?

Is it legal for a car dealer to install a gps in a customer's car with out their knowledge?

  • The car lot called 2 weeks after the car was financed and asked me to bring the car in because they wanted to detail it for me. 1 month later the car lot calls and says there is a recall on the warranty and i needed to bring it in. ok? 1 DAY later my car dies on me...completely. I call the car lot and my own mechanic. Come to find out...the first time i went in, they were actually installing a gps in my car and the second time i went in was because the gps lost signal and they had to hook it back up. Neither time saying anything about a gps. When they hooked it back up, he did it wrong and the power wire going to gps was grounding out against the radio shell. It had blown a fuse. But my question is, is it legal for them to install the gps in my car without my knowledge AFTER i had the car financed.

  • Answer:

Not on a customers car but you've missed one minor detail: It isn't your car. The finance company holds the title to the car until you have fully paid it off. It is their car that they are letting you drive, they can do any reasonable measure they see fit to protect their investment. A GPS tracker to locate the car if you stop making payments is legally considered a reasonable measure. That they will install some method to track the car (probably worded as "equipment to aid recovery in the event of non-payment" or similar rather than the more obvious"GPS Tracker") will be in the small print of the finance agreement that you signed without reading.

You apparently bought your car from a sleazebag "buy-here-pay-here" (BHPH) dealer who sells overpriced cars, finances his own loans, and charges outrageous interest rates --- and installs GPS tracking devices (in case you decide to skip town with his car) and starter interrupter devices (in case you miss a payment). Yes, it is legal for anyone, except the police, to install a GPS on anyone else's car. This includes BHPH car dealers.

If it's a condition of borrowing the lender's money to buy the car, yes totally legal.

It might be a good idea to read ALL the fine print on your finance and purchase papers. If nothing about a GPS is mentioned, just have it removed and tossed in the trash. The you might consult a lawyer in your state to see if there are any violation of privacy rules that might work to your advantage in a lawsuit.

Without your knowledge, yes, but it is in your contract. You signed and gave them permission to which are part of the terms of the deal. Reread your contract.

The lender probably required it. Yes, its legal. Pay it off and they will take the GPS off there. They are not spying on you. They will only use that if you don't pay so they can repo it. If you want to raise cane and take it off, they will repo the car. Im fairly certain it was a condition of you being financed. The stand up thing would have been to tell you in advance but they didn't. You don't get the car for free or get to not pay because of it. And you are welcome to walk in there, pay off the loan and they will be happy to remove the GPS.
