Going to study in a university in the UK.Need your advice?

I am a new Muslim considering going to an Islamic University, I would like some advice?

  • I am a former Christian, who has recently reverted to Islam. I will be receiving my undergraduate degree in Engineering from the University of Tennessee in roughly a year. After that, I would like to go to Al-Azhar or another top Islamic University in the Middle East. I have a few concerns. Firstly, if I study Arabic extensively over the next 1 1/2 year, could I become good enough to get by in an Arabic speaking country? My Arabic right now is very limited. I know maybe 50 Arabic phrases, and am just now beginning to learn the alphabet. Secondly, as a new Muslim, my knowledge of Islam is still fairly small compared to most of the people who will be attending an Islamic University, who have been Muslims for 18-20+ years. Will all the courses be designed for people with a large knowledge of Islam? I don't want it to feel like I am going straight from a middle school pre-algebra course to suddenly taking a calculus course. That would be a bit too challenging.

  • Answer:

Well, I am not sure if you can become good enough in Arabic to talk in a Arabic country in that short time. But if you try hard, you will InshAllah, succeed. Find out more about the courses before taking them cause some might require a bit more knowledge. However, Allah has made is so easy to learn Islam. Learn some of the basics, and you should be fine, because Islam is so vast, that almost every Muslim has some advanced Islamic knowledge to contribute to another. A better section to ask this question would be the Ramadan section, there are more Muslims and you'll probably recieve less "snorts", and better answers. Society and Culture>Holidays>Ramadan.

Don't worry about not being good enough or not it will come to you soon and overtime your vocabulary will get better and you will have nothing to worry about. Also I don't think being a new Muslim is a problem go the uni you want to and you shall succeed in life.
