Answer:
No It's a rather poor answer. In your answer you have identified you have a weakness but that you have chosen not to correct it for the sake of appearances. As a second bonus you have insulted the manager hiring you by implicitly claiming they will get the wrong impression of you if you ask him/her for help. This in turn opens the interviewer to thinking maybe you have low self esteem or other related problems. You should turn it around using positive words: "Even when I need help, I tend to try to solve the problem myself because I enjoy the challenge of problem solving and don't like to give up. While this may aid long term learning it can result in inefficiencies in the short term." This makes you sound like you are a self starting, lower maintenance individual with higher self esteem. If you give this answer beware of the follow-up questions: Examples, when do you know its time to give up? what are you doing to find an optimal balance.

I would answer philosophically that a person's greatest weakness often points to their greatest strength, and vice-versa. A person who is quiet and non-judgemental would make a great counselor or nurse, but would be terrible at a job that required quick decisions, even if they were wrong. In the same way, an independent person will keep pounding away at the problem whether there is help or not. If it's 6 pm and everyone has gone home, the kind of person that always asks for help might say there's nothing more they can do, but an independent person would start to try other things to solve the issue. Also mention that you're aware that it's more efficient to ask for help when it's readily available, and are working on that.
