How do you make a portfolio?

How to make a photography/art portfolio for university?

  • Im planning on going to Grant Mac-Ewan university for Design Studies/photography. And i need to make a portfolio to show them. But I don't even know where to begin? I need 9-12 pieces of artwork. Categories include paintings, drawings, digital media, collages, photographs, etc. But I have no clue how to make a portfolio. How do I present my work? What do I present my work in? Whats the best choices of work to include?

  • Answer:

Do you have a type of media that is your strongest/favorite to work with? Start there -- and open with that piece. Try to include a wide variety, not only of media but of pieces as well. You don't want pieces to be repetitive; you need to show that you are creative and original. Go through all of your work first. Decide if you have enough to work with and the amount of time you are limited to. If you would like to add one or two pieces, now would be a good time to get working on them. Present your work in an Art Portfolio and make sure to include the type of media you worked with, any information regarding the subject matter that you feel is relevant, and sound confident with artistic vocabulary. You can touch upon texture, contrasting elements within your work, and use of color. Choosing the pieces to include in your portfolio is going to up to you. You know your style -- try to include works that you really love. Make sure they display good composition and they are pleasing to the viewer's eye. Good luck!
