I am taking celexa right now, I went from 10mg to 20mg about 4 days ago. I ‘ve been having side effects for about 4 days.. I feel nauseous, I’ve had a headache for the last 4 days on and off throughout the days, I got a bit dizzy, I feel tired, have felt brain fog. I feel like my stomach is burning and in so much pain, ive had loose stools, but I don’t feel as depressed and my anxiety level is lower. I also have Irritable bowel syndrome, and this is finals week so im under a lot of stress,. I have an apt. with my doc this Friday, but until then, what do I do for the headache (don’t want to take more meds) I am already taking meds for IBS which gave me a dry mouth.. my stomach feels like it is ripping apart sort of and I am having hunger pains.. I feel not well.. help me this is the first time on antidepressents… will the side effects go away? And after how long? I feel miserable…. im 20

Answer:
Don't wait for your appt. Call the doctor right away and tell them your symptoms about your stomach, your headache and your finals. Be nice but try hard to be firm with them. Don't let them blow you off until Friday. Ask to speak with the doctor's nurse and tell her all you are going through. Ask her to talk to the doc and get back with you on what you should do. Have you ever tried BioFreeze. You can rub it on where your headache is and it helps within a few minutes. That may help you get through for studying. I am very concerned about your side effects. I don't remember all the meds my husband was on but the docs gave him one or two meds. He had side effects so they gave him something for that. And on and on. All the meds were killing his organs. His skin tone was grey, he had all your symptoms. He got to the point where he was falling down and, slurring his words like he was drunk. One morning he woke up staggering and had dark stuff on his clothes. I was concerned and asked him what was on him. In his confused state he said it was grease from working on his car the night before. I found out he had thrown up blood. If we had not gotten him to the hospital when we did, he would have died. They had to slowly give him medicine to get him out of his "high". A friend of ours in my neighborhood had the same thing happen to him. With both of them we didn't realize it was the drugs that were causing most of the problems. They can also cause some permanent damage. I am not a doctor or a nurse so my advice should not be interpreted as that. I am concerned from all your pain that this is not the right medicine for you. Call your doctor right away and tell them what your concerns are. If they don't seem to listen, find a different doctor. I have been on antidepressants and anti anxiety meds before and never had them killing my stomach like that although probably some of it is from your IBS. For me I would not use a medicine that hasn't been around for a number of years because drug companies are out to make money first. The side effects are usually much more than they report to the Food and Drug Administration and sometimes they even lie about the side effects severity in their studies. It isn't until years later and after people report severe injury or deaths does the true harm from these drugs come to light. I would try to go a natural route. Do a search for a homeopath or homeopathic chiropractor or herbologist in your area. Also I found one website that explains a bit about IBS some. I don't have IBS myself but I understand some about it. This site may be helpful to you as it explains how IBS symptoms are all lumped together when in fact not all IBS sufferers have the same symptoms. Here is the site: http://www.natural-health-remedies.net/cures-for-IBS.html I had an antidepressant give me a dry mouth. I didn't know at the time that if you have a dry mouth, you have a higher risk of getting cavities. It's something to be informed about.

I have to wonder about doctors who put students on psychoactive medications right before finals. Are they deliberately undermining you, or just stupid? I suggest you call the pharmacist. Those particular side effects will probably settle down in a couple of weeks, but too bad for those finals. You will notice that you have total sexual dysfunction if you get intimately involved anytime while you are on an SSNI or SSRI antidepressant. Almost everyone gets that side effect. I had horrible results with antidepressants. I didn't get your exact problem, but I got severe mania, and was kicked out of graduate school as a result. I never fully recovered - I had problems before I took meds, and serious ones, but I could function most of the time. After taking meds, I could never function more than a few months at a time, and got more and more meds leading to permanent disabilty. I gave up with meds after 15 years, and 2 years off meds, I continue to improve. I think these so-called "meds" are a terrible mistake. My brother got severe Tourette's from prozac, lithium or the combo, and also became debilitated immediately afterwards, never recovering fully. There are a lot of people harmed by the treatments, but our stories are not heard, because nobody's spending hundreds of millions on advertising for medical harms. It's clear to me that the drugs that I took severely affected my ability to think, and my current psychiatrist says his college professor patients won't take most medications. He agrees that I probably have brain damage from the drugs, because my ability to think continues to improve 2 years off the meds, quite dramatically. It sounds to me like you have some serious anxiety going. My social worker (thank you prozac! I have to have a social worker! But things are improving and I may not need that help anymore soon) says the lucinda bassett program has helped many of her clients with anxiety. It's often available used on Ebay. (be sure to get the workbooks, old versions on cassette tape are inexpensive). Also, there are many free meditations on youtube. You should google Kirsch antidepressants - his expertise is the placebo effect, and he found that antidepressants work primarily via that mechanism. He is a well-respected researcher. He works at Harvard, now. Follow up studies by other researchers have mostly or entirely confirmed his work. there's a great article if you google Ioannidis antidepressants also - an interview with him in a magazine, I think, and then his research article about antidepressants. He is a math whiz exposing medical mistakes, and works at Stanford now, I think. Psychiatry is in the middle of a crisis right now.
