Should I include a link to my online portfolio in my resume?

Help! What to put on a resume/portfolio for internship? (Graphic and Multimedia Design major)?

  • I'm a college student currently working on getting a degree in Graphic and Multimedia Design. And now is the time I have to search for internships. But I'm kind of stuck as to what to put on my resume. I know that every company looks for something different, but I'm looking for the key elements that will help me stand and represent myself as best as possible. Also I'm trying to figure out what would be best to include in a portfolio. I haven't done to much outside work with companies or organizations, so I'm sure the bulk of my work will come from class assignments and a little experimentation with different programs. Is that Okay? Any personal suggestions? Websites? Or are there any places that you can refer me to that will be able to look at what I have in terms of both resume/portfolio that can give me feedback? Thank you sooooooooooo much for your help in advance. All REAL help is highly appreciated

  • Answer:

Make sure you have a clear and precise objective or mission statement. The statement could include your goals, your desired position and/or how you can benefit your potential employer. For example, I'm a Graphic Designer so a possible objective statement I could use would be, "Seeking a position in the field of graphic design where I can use my creative skills to add value to a company, while continuing my education." That's a fairly basic statement so you'll want to adjust yours to fit your major or even the company you're applying to. In your resume make sure to include any awards or achievements you have made, whether it's winning a design contest or making the Dean's list. You can also include your G.P.A. if it's something worth noting. Other things to include can be clubs you belong to or freelance work you've done. If you don't have much experience outside of school, but do work in another field such as retail make sure to list any skills that may translate into Multimedia or Graphic Design such as customer service or working as a team. It is definitely okay to include school work in your portfolio. Many employers will know and understand, especially when applying for an internship, that you work will mostly consist of class projects. If your work shows your creativity and that you are able to use the programs without a problem and as long as you are able to talk about or explain your work during an interview you should be good. Good luck!
