How do you get a Clown fish to eat?

Will my 2 small clown fish get along with an algae eater?

  • i have around a 5 gallon fish tank (tropical fish obviously since i have the clown fish) , one is the regular orange, and the other is a black clown fish if it makes a difference, but my tank even though i clean it more than required, it tends to get a lot of extra algae. so i was considering buying an algae eater. will one of them get along with the clownfish or will they try to attack it? ALSO, if its safe to put one in there, what kind would you recommend for me? im no pro at taking care of fish so nothing that requires too much work...thanks for the help everyone!!

  • Answer:

It would depend on what kind of "algae eater" we're talking about here; fresh or saltwater species. Typically algae eating species will get along no problem with clowns, but it would be a very bad idea for you to add anything. Your tank is far too small for even the pair of fish that you have, let alone anything else. Your tank has algae because it is overstocked. A clown pair (if they are the smaller ocellaris or percula clowns) need a 20 gallon minimum, with more being better. I'd recommend you definitely look into upgrading your tank, and leave any new tank mates on hold until then.

I assume you either have freshwater fish that you are calling clown fish or don't realize that algae eaters are not saltwater fish.... Either way, you don't sound experienced enough to be keeping ANY sort of fish.

1. you need a 30 gallon tank for clownfish. 2. what kind for algae eater you are talking about b/c you can not put a Plecostomus in there. you will need a saltwater snail and Hermit Crabs.

pretty sure 5 gallons is way to small for clown fish at any size, and certainly to small for anything other than a single betta. I'm curious now if you have clown fish and are even keeping them in saltwater.

Clown fish are salt water fish. If your "clown" stays under an inch then what you have is probably a bumblebee gobie. You can keep a couple bumblebee gobies in a 5 gallon so you lucked out there but a 5 is way to small to add an algae eater.
