How many cichlids should I keep in one tank?

Can I keep other fish with my African Cichlids?

  • I have three African cichlids in a 35-gallon tank. I have one Chinese algae eater in there with them. I would like to know if I can keep other fish in there with them; I was thinking of another equally-sized fish as I thought this might keep the aggression to a minimum. Any suggestions would be great :)

I have an Oscar and an African ciclid, and for the first week they got along great, and then the African declaired war. I now have him in a ten gallon tank since he is tiny, but I don't feel safe adding any other fish besides Africans and plecs. I have been told that ciclids with the same level of aggression can do well with Africans, but after last time I have been scared to chance it since I don't have room for a third tank. If it were me I would talk to the store you get your fish from. If they are anything like the.place I get mine from they will be able to answer any question you have. Also, Google has some great information, and if you have an android phone, I found an app all about African ciclids.
