How do regular ordinary goldfish mate?

Does my Goldfish need a tank mate?

  • So I just got a white Oranda Goldfish with an orange wen! He is really small right now, only about an inch long...Anyways, I was wondering if he needs a tank mate or if he will be perfectly fine by himself? Thanks, and any other info in appreciated! ;)

    Goldfish don't get lonely and can manage by themselves. Just make sure the fish you do have, has a big enough tank. He may be only an inch now, but he has the potential to grow huge! When goldfish are kept in an undersized tank, they release a hormone to stop themselves growing lengthways. Sadly their internal organs grow at the normal rate. This means a very prolonged and painful death for them. Most good goldfish breeders recommend at tank size of 30+ gallons per 1st goldy, then 10 gallons per subsequent goldy. Make sure it is wider than it is tall for good gas exchange. Whatever the recommended filter capacity for the size of your tank, double the filteration for goldies as they are very messy fish indeed. how big is the tank? gold fish need at least a 20 gallon. They are the messiest fish out there. and if you want more, add 10 gallons per additional fish onto the 20 gallons.

Does he need one? No. If you have 30 gallons+ you can put another one in there if you wish for the sake of a more lively aquarium but they generally don't care for tank mates. What's more important is the amount of water or space that they have because they have a high waste output that can pollute the tank if there is too little water. With more water, there's less of a concentration of this poop that can turn into nitrate and poison your fish.

While goldfish do prefer company they don't NEED it. Unless the tank is large, just keep the single fish. Adding more just means the tank will get overcrowded faster, and they are all likely to die. It depends how large the tank is, anything under 10 gallons no hes fine alone (gold fish need a minimum of 10 gallons) but anything over 10 sure you can include other fish, just be sure to have a strong filter!
