How do we control our bladder during sleep?

If you believe in Karma is it bad Karma to put a dog to sleep?

  • Our lab dog is 14 1/2 yearsold he has gotten to where he can not stand up without assistance. Not everytime, but probably 3 out of 5 times we raise him up. He still has bladder control etc. He is not in pain and has a good appetite. He is still social. Is it better to let him gradually get worse and just die or put him to sleep? Do older dogs die in their sleep one night? He is our boy and we love him dearly, but in the last few weeks we have been seeing a decline. Are we doing right by keeping him with us and letting nature take its course? At the vet last year he said our dog has already outlived his life expectancy. I think I can't take his life, it is not mine to take. My husbands mom said she would have already put him to sleep.

You are the only person that can make that decision. Only you know his quality of life. A dog would have to be in really bad shape for a vet to tell you it needs to be put to sleep. They usually leave that up to the owner. It is not bad karma. If the dog is suffering more than it's happy, it's time. It is really sad to see owners who selfishly keep their miserable dogs alive by any means just because they don't want to let them go. Putting a dog down to end it's suffering is the right thing to do. When it's time and your holding him while he get the injection, he will let out his last breath. It is a sigh of relief.

Here is a quality of life scale. Look it over, then decide. No, Karma won't come back to bite you in the butt if you are doing what's best for the dog. http://www.allpetsmacomb.com/qualityoflife.html

I couldn't do it. I'd take care of the dog until his time came. I love my dog so much.

If he is not in any pain then I would just let nature take its course.

Not all dogs will die in their sleep. Even though we wish they would so we don't have to put them to sleep. It is never an easy decision make. I've had to do it more times than I can count, but that is part of the circle life, knowing when to let go. I have always been able to see when that sparkle was no longer in their eyes. Somehow you just know. At 14 1/2 years of age he has had a great life. Mine made it to 15 and couldn't stand anymore either. I came home from work one day and that sparkle was no longer in his eyes nd I told him I had to do what was best fo him. I held him and I cried and he knew that I was going to do what needed to be done to ease his pain. Saying goodbye hurts and I won't lie, but seeing him hurt would have been a much greater discomfort. I am so sorry you are faced with this decision, but your lab has given you many years of joy, allow him to go in peace nd be pain free.

That is the hardest choice anybody ever has to make. But I think if he needs help getting up he does have pain. They are good at hiding it. Yes some die in there sleep. We had our Springer for 13 years, and even tho' he let us know it was time to leave us...it was hard. At the end our kid couldn't walk without help. If you see him declining at a fast rate, let him go with the dignity and respect he deserves. He knows you love him. He will be waiting for you on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

I think he can't get up because he has painful arthritis. Don't worry Dog's don't fear death like humans do. look into ways you could euthanize him at home where he's comfortable. I think it's the right thing to do. It's your responsibility to your beloved dog.

they will die in their sleep if they are really old and it is really bad to put a dog in sleep.

I had a lab and we had to have him put to sleep last year, it was devastating, but because labs are prone to arthritis it was the right thing to do, I could not stand up at all, the whole day he laid in the garden not eating or drinking and it was the best thing for him as it would put him out of his pain. I dont believe that would give you bad karma because if we didn't put him to sleep he would have suffered. I would only put your dog to sleep if he is truly suffering. I miss Bracken (my dog) every single day but I know we did the right thing by him <3 hope this helps, and I wish you all the luck with your decision, its not an easy one.

Ultimately, this is your decision with your Vet. It sounds like your dog has had 14 1/2 good years with you, but it also sounds like you are saying your dog is not in pain, eats well and gets around good enough though there is some difficulty with first getting going. I have a Golden Retriever mix that has hip problems, and she is 11 yrs old now. She is also slow to get started and some days she limps around. Other days she seems fine. I personally wouldn't think of euthanizing her because she still has a good quality of life regardless of her age. What I believe about Karma really doesn't matter. What matters is how you will feel with the decision you make. I can tell you love your dog and I know it is painful to start seeing the decline from the healthy more playful days. It reminds you that the clock is winding down and that you will be facing the loss of your dog. I know that is a hard thought. Some older dogs do die in their sleep. Some may suddenly get ill. In either case, it sounds to me like you are preparing for what is to come. I would not make a decision on my husband's moms' beliefs or any one elses. I'd make the decision with my Vet and my immediate family but if this was my dog, I'd have the ultimate decision after weighing all factors out.
