My dog wont stop itching?
-
I have a 3 almost 4 year old Yorkie(female) and last year around this time of year she startied itching really badly too, she actually itches herself so much her skin is raw, red, and sometimes bruised. I'm thinking it may be allergies, because the vet last year said that animals can get allergies, so we started giving her a very small dosage of childrens benedril and it seemed to help, she would itch a lot less but we tried that this year, and she barfed. I'm thinking she barfed because it intermixed with her new flea medicine? (she takes like chewable pill medicine) and she used to use a different kind but they stopped carrying it so we had to switch:( we've also tried bathing her with head and shoulders thinking maybe she had itchy dry skin, but that kind of made it worse. Nothing has changed from last year other than the flea medicine. but again, she itched last year the same way around the same time but the benedril helped then. any suggestions? weve also tried hot spot treatment but that doesnt really help either. She also licks herself a LOT after itching but i think its because of the itching because at the time of year she doesnt itch she doesnt lick herself like that. Any suggestions?

Answer:
Yes sounds like seasonal or food allergies. Double check for fleas, as that is very common (even though you are on a prevention medication). You can give benadryl (diphenhydramine) 2-3 times a day, 1mg per pound (IE 15lb yorkie = 15mg benadryl, 2-3 times a day). If you say it has helped, keep on it, there are minimal risks with diphenhydramine, it is very safe. Switching to a hypoallergenic food may help wonders, though it can get very expensive. You may be able to get by by simply switching to a different ingredient: IE if you feed something that is chicken/beef mixture, switch to something that is 100% not chicken/beef (IE salmon, pork) I would also just stop in to your vet. If it is just seasonal allergies, he/she will likely prescribe you with a steroid called Prednisone. This will alleviate symptoms immediately, but is not recommended for long term. So you will likely be able to use it a few weeks on, then a few weeks off...this might help you get through the allergy season that bugs here the most. Best of luck

Benadryl helps relieve the symptoms, but your dog will continue to be uncomfortable unless the source of her allergies is removed. Allergies could be seasonal environmental allergies, food allergies, and other causes. I've known people who got their dog tested for allergies and they were allergic to strange things like bugs and even the sun. (Sounds crazy, but I've met multiple people who said that.) The MSN article below is a good one on environmental allergies in dogs. Have you tried switching her dog food? A lot of dogs have food allergies. Some common ingredients that dogs are allergic to are wheat, soy, and corn. Take a look at the ingredients and see if it has those ingredients. The blog post below has more on what to look for in a good food and what to avoid. Have you asked the vet about a possible drug interaction? Ask them if her getting sick could be because of the Benadryl plus flea medicine. It could be just a coincidence, so better to ask than to stop a medication she needs. Hope that helps.
