Why has my laptop screen confused black with red?

HDMI Cable only shows screen on TV?

  • Hi, I've just plugged my old HDMI cable into my Windows 7 Dell Laptop, and connected it into my Samsung television. Unfortunately, it only shows the screen on the television, and on my laptop it shows me my screensaver, with no toolbar, mouse or icons. I can move the mouse on the computer and see it moving on the screen though. I'm quite confused, because it worked fine yesterday, and I haven't edited anything at all. My Screen Resolution is set to 'extend these displays' on both of the monitors, so I'm quite confused on what could be causing this problem. If you could help, that would be great. Many Thanks, Reestv.

  • Answer:

When you "extend" your display it literally extends your display to the second screen as an extension of the computer display, it doesn't duplicate the screen. If you want both screens to show the exact same info (toolbars, icons, etc...) then you need to disable (uncheck) the "extend display" option in the display properties & activate the external display mode of your computer using the keyboard Fn (Function) keys for activating the external monitor connection. It will be one of the 'F' keys you'll need to use with the Fn key (keys vary depending on computer make & model).
