A voltage spike fried the power supply if you are lucky. The spike happen when the power was turn back on. A electrical motor start up with low voltage and this spike travel with in the house. A good surge protector would keep this problem at the outlet. But good surge protector cost more then $10. Do a google search on surge protector and learn about good one and pieces junk.

Like the other person said, if your power supply for your computer failed to have a surge protection then likely it died.

You really need to get a surge protector the LOWER value in jules the better! Try unplugging the PC and turning it on to dis-charge any power that may have found it's way into the box. During a surge the Power Supply Unit will give up it's life to protect the rest of the computer. If when you plug the computer in and turn it on, there are no signs of life (no lights, no images on the screen and no fans turning), the PSU might be burnt out. If you have a power strip between the wall outlet and your power cord it might also be fried, some of them have breaker switches on/in them; you might want to see if it has a power light in it and if so it is on. If you have a power strip try plugging the computer directly in to the wall outlet and see if it powers up then; if it does then replace the power strip; this time with one that has a serge protector. If the monitor still goes on (the power light goes on when you turn the monitor on) and it is plugged in to the same power source as the computer you can determine that power source is good. I've recently had a similar experience no to long ago were I plugged a known good lamp and plugged it into the wall outlet I was using for my computer and found the outlet had no power going to it. Just before replacing it, I found a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt) outlet in my kitchen had tripped and had also cut the power to my desk! If you find the outlet is dead, you should check the rest of the house before going to anything. If you still have no signs of life, you will have to trouble shoot the PC box. First remove everything attached to the box except for the keyboard and try starting up again. If the computer starts, shut it down and add each of the extras one at a time (the monitor and mouse first so you can shut down properly) until you find the item that is keeping your computer from powering up. If you still have no joy you will have to open the computer up or bring it to a repair shop. Get a hold of me directly as I need more information to help any further. J. R.
