What does a graphic designer do in the gaming industry?

How to get into the gaming industry as a game designer? (not programming)?

  • I really want to be the kind of person who thinks of ideas for games, characters, settings etc. I like to think I have a good imagination, and I've always been told I have but I have no idea what kind of qualifications I would need to get into it. Any info would be helpful or links to guides/more info :)

If you don't want to do programming then go for a graphic design based degree. Being sick at art will help your cause immensely and knowledge of industry standard software is a must. Gaming companies almost exclusively hire artists or programmers to develop and build games, Games Design degrees are a bit of a joke within the industry. Writers for games are relatively new and are generally not involved in the game at a conception level, in most cases they will be told what the game is and the overall arc of the plot, then merely spin a story based on that, obviously I'm simplifying here a bit. To be honest there isn't really a job within the gaming industry where you sit about thinking of ideas for games, characters, settings etc. The big players rely on franchise titles (Mario, COD, GTA, Zelda, Final Fantasy et al) with the real innovation coming from small independent companies. If you want to get a feel for things and see how good your imagination really is then I suggest 'acquiring' Adobe Flash CS5 and just start making your own games. Get good and you can start putting them on sites like Newsgrounds.com, building a portfolio and possibly garnering attention for yourself in the process! Good luck with whatever you decide!

Well, read the article in the source. You're looking at creative writing courses, a lot of hard work (that'll probably be underappreciated), and an education that is likely to be more akin to a journalist than anything else. If you can add some math to the mix, that's nice. If you can get writing credits for something, that's also nice.

A Designing Degree, plus a great motivation and some CV sending ;)

that's screenwriting. It's usually done also in cinema. It's surely an artistic/literary pathway. Also you would benefit by learning some graphics software...
