I need help deciding on a major in the medical field.

I Need help deciding a college major..?

  • Okay, so, I know as a fact that I want to work in the medical field always have wanted to work in it always will. So the job i was looking into was a Pharmacist MD, well after so research( which was immensely boring because of the lack of knowledge and college advertisements not answering my question but just trying to get me to go to their college, displayed on the web), I found out that Pharmacy degrees used to be in a shortage and as of now they are moving towards surplus which means bad for me. So here's where you come in I need help deciding what to do, I've taken multiple "aptitude" test which I have also found useless because they ask questions based on my"personality" not my field of interest. basically the majors i have been looking at include but are not limited to your opinions: Biochemist Chemistry EMT Paramedic Anatomy Though I am more of a scientist type (I like to think and be able to experiment and obtain new knowledge on subjects such as life) I find the healthcare field interesting because as I said I strive to be intelligent and know as much as i can about the human body or even how to create chemical compounds and solutions that would be beneficial to the human body. As you can tell i have no idea what course I want to major in, but defiantly without question I want a job that has a reasonable demand( because of financial issues i would have to take student loans and I need a job that can land me a career pretty quickly after i complete course so i can get out of debt asap) I would also like to do a course where I obtain a higher level of education (More that a B.S 4 year) Help me out, thank you fellow answer seekers

  • Answer:

EMT is usually just a certificate consisting of only 110 hours of training which you get at a tech school, ambulance company or fire station. EMTs usually work for minimun wage or volunteer and have another career. Paramedic is not that much more than EMT with just a few more months of training. You can get an Associates degree and there are even a few schools that offer a Bachelors if you want to go into management. But, the degree will not be needed to gain employment which is usually with a fire department or private ambulance. Both of these will give you a quick cert for employment but market is pretty flooded since the educational requriements are so low. The fire department is also very difficult to get hired by and probably will not work well around a college schedule but then neither will an ambulance with 24 hour shifts 3 days per week.

If given the choice, I would not go into EMS as I have, but I did not like college and paramedic is a certificate program. There are EMS degree programs where you also become a paramedic, maybe you would be interested in that (George Washington University has one).A degree that leads to working or managing a medical lab might be good. If you like patient care, you could work on becoming an RN - that opens up a lot of opportunities.
