Will any insurance policy cover a rock busting your windshield?
-
I ran into a little trouble today. I let my two buddies borrow my ATV to make a trip down the road. Yea yea I know ATV's aren't supposed to be on public roads and it was a two lane double yellow line road. Anyways, they came back up to the house saying a truck was right on their tail all the way up the road. Anyways I get back on my ATV and my friends get on theirs and we go up to the spot where we were going to ride. We pull off the road and stop at this car wash so i can fix my boots. I heard a man saying "Can I get the number to one of your parents?" I couldn't figure out what he was going on about. According to him, when my buddies went down the road on my ATV they pulled out in front of him and hit a rock which hit his windshield, cracking it. He threw in a few "choice words". He said either we were going to take him to one of our parents or he was calling the state police. Obviously since we weren't supposed to be on the road with ATV's by law we took him to one of parents. We went back down the road to my friends house since his mom was the only parent home at the time. So since it was my ATV he said I was liable. My dad said his insurance would cover this though. Also his girlfriend was the one driving and it was her dad's truck. He was away and wouldn't be back until Sunday. So we gave him our name and number and he was supposed to call us when he found out about the insurance. I'm scared he will lie and say his policy doesn't cover it, making us pay for a new windshield just so he can keep the money. But he did tell our parents that the driver of the ATV sped up when he tried to pass it, swerved all over the road, and that the passenger looked back at him laughing. When my friend told me he was driving just fine. He also told our parents that he kept his cool and didn't cuss at us at the car wash. Which was lies. I live in a sub-division and my friends said when they turned in to the sub-division the car behind them went on up the road. Wouldn't it have made more sense if he would have followed them home? Something sounds weird about this. Personally I think he's feeding us the BS just to get our money. The windshield could have cracked weeks ago and he just found someone to pay for his replacement. Help would be appreciated.

Answer:
You must have special coverage for this in most states. Check your policy under special coverage.

Whether or not his insurance covers it is irrelevant. Your friends are still responsible. Even if his insurance does pay, his insurance company will make your friends pay them back.
