Question about palm to the cell phone?

Cell phone radiation question!!! Please answer!?

  • So, I am pretty sure you are all aware of the fact that cell phones have quite high radiation levels and it is adviced by most scientists that we don't place them anywhere close to our bodies because they can cause varying levels of damage. Well, I am a guy and so far I've never placed my cell phone close to my body, in jean pockets and things like that, knowing the long-term consequences; on the contrary, if I want to go out I always hold it in my hands, away from my body, or I put it in my coat's pockets. Simultaneously, when I'm at school, I always put it in my coat and then, I intelligently place my hands in my trousers' pockets, pushing its sides behind, close to my back. That way I make sure vital organs of my body aren't exposed to the radiation, such as my heart, my testicles etc. However, I usually follow all of the above precautions during winter, when I have the ability to wear clothes which allow me to keep my phone away from my body through their great number of pockets which provide me with a wide range of options concerning where I can place my phone. Yet, summer is approaching, thus making it impossible for me to wear coats and other extra clothes due to the gradually rising temperatures, which means I'll have to put my cell phone dangerously close to my body. One option about where I can place my phone which I reject is putting it in one of the pockets of my trousers, because the radiation it emits is known to cause male fertility by killing sperm production, and I certainly don't want to end up being infertile by my 20s. Carrying my phone around during summer is going to be a stupid choice, as well, since I don't want to keep one of my hands constantly occupied. Moreover, as far as school is concerned, I have a serious issue there, too. As I've already said, it's almost summer in my country, which means that I can't keep carrying around my coat during school breaks if I want to text a friend. Another thing is that I can't hold my phone in my hands at school premises because my school has a very strict cell phone policy, especially after an incident which recently occured in which a student was caught photographing a professor and was then led to the headmistress for punishment. I know I wasn't very clear explaining my point but please try to understand my problem and help me out. Basically, I want two questions to be answered: first, where can I keep my cell phone when I'm outdoors, excluding the option of putting it in the pockets of my trousers due to high radiation levels and secondly, where can I place my phone when I'm at school, once again excluding the solutions of putting it in my pockets and holding it in my hands, as I could get caught by a passing-by teacher who spots it? Thanks a lot for taking the time to read my question! Please do answer because I am really looking forward to learning the best and most sanitary place to put my cell phone (seriously, I'm not being vulgar).

  • Answer:

Yes there is radiation coming from the phone, but it is not high levels of radiation, if it was high, then you would feel the affects of it very fast and have radiation poisoning. You won't feel any effects from it probably your entire life. Don't stress on it, everything nowadays has radiation, and places that have wifi have radio waves around and its all going in your body, that can mess you up as well.

Daba is right, it's best to take a cautious approach when the research doesn't really support a definitive answer. Flight mode is a great option - also remember if you're actually phoning, the headset / earphones that came with the phone is great, keeps it away from your head. Depending on your school uniform, can you perhaps use cargo-style pants that have pockets lower down on the leg, maybe near the knee? That's not optimal, but better than hip pockets. Another option might be a satchel in which you can carry books and such, and have the phone in an outside pocket, away from your body. Good luck, hope you find a good solution - I'm also hoping cargo pants come back into fashion soon, hopefully a lot more men can use this to stay safe and err on the side of caution.

One of the things to take into account is the fact that cell phone radiation is not of the same wavelength and strength as X-Rays, Cosmic Radiation, Cathode Ray Tube TV's and so on. The Total Effective Dose (the radiation dose received by the human body weighted by the wavelength and strength) from a cell phone is trivial to what you get exposed to on a daily basis just from being alive. Radiation is everywhere, and there is no way to eliminate it. (It is possible to attenuate radiation to a certain extent, but that involves shielding, like lead, which has a tenth-thickness (the amount of material needed to attenuate all but roughly 10% of the radiation on the other side) of 2 inches.) Since a lot of people lack sufficient knowledge about radiation, they are afraid of it, and it is impossible that cell phone radiation itself makes men sterile. It takes a very high amount of radiation to render men sterile, and there are other signs of radiation poisoning that take place first before sterility is even detectable. A lot of the "articles" on-line are written by people that do not know anything about what they write, especially when it comes to scientific articles, tailored to the fears/likes/dislikes of whatever group they are apart of. If cell phone radiation scares you so much, perhaps you should just stick to a land-line phone.

Turning 3G, Blutooth & Wi-Fi off when you're not using it will lower the amount of radiation leakage. If you're really concerned, put it in flight mode, or turn it off when not in use. I put mine in my bag whenever I'm in class as it's just a detraction and I too am a bit concerned. I just try to minimize exposure, turn off at night, don't keep close unless I'm using it. (I still put it in my pocket when I'm on the go, 2hrs isn't too much exposure in your pants pocket in my view). Convenience vs Precaution. Balance the pros and cons and come up with a compromise. Also note that all the "proof" and "facts" aren't really so. Cell phones have not been around long enough to study the long term effects. It's always good to be careful though. As to where on the body, I'd try to keep it as far away from my brain and balls as possible as those are the two areas most likely to be affected. I personally would go to about chest height if possible. Some jackets have inside pockets which are perfect. You should also turn your home wi-fi router off when you're sleeping (I put a digital timer adapter on my outlet connection), and check out home much radiation YOUR phone gives off in relation to others (search the net for your brand and a comparison). Good luck
