What's pediatric residency like?

Plan on moving to a big city for my med school/surgical residency Where should i live?

  • Im from southern illinois and for my surgical residency i plan on moving to a big city. Im thinking Chicago or NYC. Im from southern illinois so chicago would be preferred but im from a small town. just trying to decide which is best and which part of the city i should live in. In chicago im thinking near north area (id love to live in trump tower) and im thinking upper east or west side of manhattan for NYC. I would really like to drive a car in chicago but i know in NYC thats not possible. Ill be making 50000 dollars a year and id like a nice 1-2 bedroom apartment. Also because of my job i will be working irregular hours so which city would have the best options for nightlife (bars, clubs, resturants and the like) and which city will have the best restaurants and the nicest people? Also whats your take on Indianapolis. Or which other large city would you recommend.

  • Answer:

In my opinion the best teaching hospitals are in New York City or Philadelphia. Both would offer some nightlife, and at that salary you should have no problem finding an apartment near the hospital. Good luck

It may be hard to make ends meet on a resident's salary in the upscale parts of NYC and Chicago. There are some middle class areas that might work better. NYC and Chicago will have better nightlife than Indy, but Indy has some very nice people. You will not have much time for nightlife as a resident. You will be spending nearly all your time working, sleeping, or taking care of personal needs. Other cities to consider - Madison, WI; Columbus, OH; and Philadelphia, PA.

I would recommend Indianapolis too. There is plenty of nightlife in Indianapolis for a city its size although granted Chicago has more but you pay a hefty premium in cost of living/taxes/rent for that. Indianapolis has the nations most affordable housing market and lowest cost of living of any major city. plus only a 3 hour drive from Chicago/St Louis. Indianapolis has the awsome Hoosier Hospitality which is real and people are willing to go out of their way to help you :) Nightlife Corridors in Indianapolis are concentrated downtown just south of Monument Circle near Circle Centre Mall and Mass ave/Broad Ripple Village.
