Could I get my tubes tied at 18? If not, how young can I get them tied?
-
I don't want kids. 1. I think it is selfish to have kids when there are so many kids already living that need to be adopted. 2. It's painful and could kill me. 3. It's expensive. 4. I want to travel around the world and possibly join the Peace Corps. How young can I get my tubes tied if I live in the U.S.?

Answer:
While your reasons for seeking out sterilization are valid points I believe most reputable doctors would make you wait until at least your early to mid twenties. You may very well believe that your opinions on giving birth will never change but they very well may and to reverse a tubal ligation is invasive and may not work. Until you have lived life a little more seek out long term birth control such as an iud or something similar. Best of luck on whatever you choose.

Ask your doctor. There are other means of birth control, and your reasons -- especially No. 3 and 4 -- are stupid, stupid reasons for wanting the procedure done, so don't mention those to your doctor. (I was in Peace Corps and traveled the world. Unless you intend to have unprotected sex every night -- which would be even more stupid -- having your tubes tied doesn't enter into the equation. Why would it?) Your reason No. 2 could be applied to absolutely anything you do, including eating, driving and walking outside, so it's pretty pointless, too. You come off sounding like an unsure but headstrong teen who thinks she has the answers for the world. That's not a bad thing, but listen to adults on this one: feelings change over time. I never wanted to have kids. At 43, I still don't. But I promise you, every single one of my friends who said the same thing as vehemently as I did are happy parents now. You might not change your mind. I didn't. But you might. And right now (sorry, I know you don't want to do this), you are not near mature enough to make that decision. Just the fact you listed No. 2-4 as what you must think are valid reasons illustrates that. As the other poster mentioned, there are other long-term methods of birth control if you plan on being sexually active. But remember that they don't protect from STDs

You can get semi-permanent birth control right now for free without having to get permission from anyone and you would avoid a surgical procedure. Go to your public health office and ask about your options ...

Are you my daughter? Just kidding. Read L's answer again, and take it to heart. Best answer, by far. I'd give it more thumbs up if I had more thumbs.

Not sure how young exactly but when I had my second kid at 23 the doctors asked if I'd like to get my tubes tied.
