Can a mailing address be different than your residential address?
-
I'm an adult, and I was pretty much disowned by my parents and kicked out (due to being in a relationship with someone they disapprove of...3+years with her and going). I'm currently living with her in NJ, but my legal residence is still in PA. I can't exactly change my residential address YET for reasons, but I need my mailing address changed now ASAP. My parents have my mail, and they are continuing to get my mail without giving it to me unless I go back to them...which I don't want to do. Legally it is "okay" for them to have my mail, due to the fact that I still legally have their house as my address. Is it possible/legal to change my mailing address to where I'm living in NJ, but not my residential address? I also don't want to get a PO box, because it's very expensive to where I am, $35-65 for just 3 months.

Answer:
If you were truly an adult, you would have told us your age, so I don't believe that comment. Since you think that $35 to $65 is too expensive for a PO Box, you probably don't have a job. I suspect you are living illegally as a minor with a woman who IS of legal adult age, which is called statutory rape (on her part) and that would explain your parents' attitude. It's illegal for your parents to open your mail, but since their home is your legal residence, there's really no law saying they can't simply hold your mail for your return home. If you are legally a minor child and living with an adult female in another state, your parents should have her arrested for kidnapping and statutory rape and that would solve the problem quickly. cw

If you are legally an adult, at age 18, you can do as you please regarding mail and residence. A post office box is the best example. All you need do is pay the fee and file a change of address with the postmaster in the residence zip code. You can have your mail sent anywhere you please. I live in a rural area of Washington State. All of my bills and important things go to my PO Box, so I never have to worry about anyone walking by my mailbox and pilfering the mail... It does NOT have to be a PO Box, but THAT is the best example. You can file a change of address to ANY other address anywhere as long as it is YOURS to change! If a regular post office box is too expensive, look into something like the UPS store or any other package service. UPS and others have lock boxes that they use for mail. Have you ever seen an address where they had a street address and like an apartment building, had a suite number? That was probably a mail drop service run by a package delivery service. They are NOT in the business of mail, instead, mail is simply delivered to their street address and they subdivide all the mail into separate lock boxes. UPS does NOT deliver mail, but they CAN receive mail from anyone addressed to anyone at their physical street address and hold your mail for pickup. And they can collect letters and turn them over to the mailman for you. You do NOT have to deal ONLY with the post office to have a "box" for your mail. The key is this, mailing address and residence address are two separate unrelated issues. Residence is where you LIVE, mailing address is where you receive your mail and it may or may not be where you LIVE. Do you see the difference? My electric company requires a residence to deliver electricity, but the bill goes to my PO box...

You can have a temporary mailing address. go to post office and fill out a change of address form with your current address on it, and show it a a temporary change of address. that is all you need to do. The post office will send it to your home Post office and any mail that is addressed to you will be forwarded to you at the new address. As far as your parents withholding your mail, that is illegal. if you complain to the postal authorities, they will force your parents to send your mail to you .

Your parents may not keep your mail. The post office where you receive your mail can help with that issue. Your legal address is where you spend your time and where you sleep. To maintain a legal residence in two states may be a bit shifty; you'd need to consult with an attorney (or perhaps the post office!) about that one. Meanwhile, I'd be in touch with anyone who sends you mail and move your mailing address, no matter which state, to somewhere that your parents don't have access to....perhaps a friend's house?..

I find it very difficult to believe that there is an adult in his country who can't figure filling out a change of address card at the post office ... Or that thinks eleven dollars a month is "very expensive." Go home, kid, before you get yourself killed. Or worse.
