What are the job opportunities for journalism?

Why does everyone say that it's tough to get a job in journalism?

  • Now, I know that in the last few years online media outlets have forced a lot of print editions out of business and, as a result, many people have been layed off. However, even when I was considering majoring in journalism twelve years ago, I was advised against it. Everyone told me that it's tough even to land an entry-level job or an internship. I've always been interested in journalism and have known that I wouldn't get rich doing it. Still, I don't understand why people say that it's very hard - even in the late 1990s - to get a foot in the door. I mean there are hundreds of TV and radio stations, newspaper/internet publications, and magazines. There must be some opportunities. I regret not going into this field. Any input would be appreciated.

I think what surprises a lot of people is when getting a degree in it doesn't open more doors. Most journalists I've known majored in something else and have little respect for a degree in it.

Its hard for you to get a job if you are HONEST.
