Is a pumpkin still good if the seeds inside are rotten?

I planted pumpkin seeds 3 weeks ago and they still aren't sprouting..... what wrong? I have been watering them?

  • I've been watering them and everything and they still haven't sprouted. The package says that i should see sprouting in 2 weeks. Oh yea and they are in the sun.

  • Answer:

It's way too early to sow pumpkin seeds unless you want to harvest before the end of August. Your seeds have probably rotted from over-watering. No matter...plenty-o-time left for a hardy fall harvest! Sow again toward the end of May. Apply a light mulch of grass clippings to keep the seed bed from drying. Do not water unless weather conditions are dry.

How much have you been watering them and what is the over night temperature where you are. Pumpkins really do not like cool soil and generally will not sprout it warms up to at least 55 to 60 for several weeks. Rookie beginner gardeners usually make the mistake of over watering when they do not see anything coming up. Typically this will drown the seed and kill it.

carefully dig up the site and see if they're still in tact... if the seeds are soggy and mushy, then throw them away and start over again. If they're still good, put some soil back over them and wait another week or so. ...pumpkin seeds get mushy sometimes, don't get discouraged, weather, soil temperature, etc can deter a seed's germination process. ...last Halloween, we carved our pumpkins outside, and I just threw some of the leftover seeds in the ground to see what would happen, and they just started to sprout last month, actually I forgot I had done that until I saw baby seedlings sprouting everywhere. ...but I also planted some Cinderella pumpkin seeds in my raised bed, and those are not doing well at all...I think I need to start over with my cinderellas...and I live in warm climate So California, so if you live in cooler climate you may need to wait till mid May.

You don't say where you live. Look up frost dates on google and find out when the soil is warm enough for seeds to grow in your area.
