What are some good cards to put in a black magic the gathering deck?

Magic: The Gathering Deck Help?

  • I'm new to Magic: The Gathering, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what kind of deck an "Avacyn, Angel of Hope" would be good for and some good strategies on how to build the deck. It Costs (5) and 3 White, so it's expensive, but I would just love to pull it out one time in a game. I just got it on Saturday at the Pre-release. Had tons of fun, can't say the same about last night though. Everyone was very rude last night because I'm new. I'm not sure what made the difference, it was mostly the same people. But people kept complaining on how bad the "Noobs" were and how they hate how most of us were pulling all of the Mythics. It was the Helvault, so everyone gets 6 packs of cards from the Avacyn Restored. We only had 15 minutes to put our decks together before they started the game, and that's including how long it took to hand out all of the cards. Most of us who are new didn't even get time to look at the effects of the cards or what they were before it was time to start, so it was pretty rushed. Although I have to admit, it doesn't seem like a bright idea even for someone who was playing for only a week to skip passing up putting any of his 3 Mythics or the Planeswalker he drew in his deck.(That one wasn't me, I only drew 2 Mythics worth mentioning and I can't remember what my second one is right now.) Thanks to anyone who at least tries to help.

Unlike the other two, I think Avacyn is pretty damn good. It is evasive, flying, great at attacking and still being able to block, vigilance, and makes itself and everything else on your board indestructible. The biggest problem is the mana cost. Maybe build a stall deck built around angels? Herald of War seems to be a solution for the mana: for every +1/+1 counter on it reduces the colorless cost of humans and angels by one colorless.

Build the deck with lots of creatures and mana gain cards. As Avacyn makes your lands, creatures etc. indestructible/immortal, you want her in the game as fast as possible, so you need a fast way of getting the 8 mana in play. Also build the deck with a good deal of flying creatures, this will give you an edge on players using primarily non-flying creatures, as they will be unable to block. Without knowing more about the cards you have in your collection, I can't really give you any more... But google around for good mana gain deck recipes and see what they contain.

People can be quite rude, and complaining is part of magic. Rushing deck assembly is a bit bad organization though. Using Avacyn can be a bit hard though. She's not actually a good card to play in most environments. Single-color, I don't think she works with mono-white control since her cost is so high, they ought to win before she would come out. Green/White could accelerate into her quickly, but there are other choices that help you win better. Black/White could do Heartless Summoning to get her out, I suppose. Black might go with reanimation I suppose. However, then you have the problem of how easy it is to deal with her, so...I'm just not sure. Sorry to throw cold water on you, but I can't get worked up over this card.

Honestly, Avacyn, Angel of Hope just isn't that good of a card. An 8 mana drop needs to have that "boom, I just won" effect. Avacyn, Angel of Hope doesn't have it. I guess if I was trying to build a deck around it, you have 3 options. 1) Green mana acceleration. 2) Re-animation effects. 3) Some of the cards that say "put creature from your hand into play"
