Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to be a teacher. In the recent months I decided I wanted to be a high school math teacher. But I don't know what to major in to become one. Some people say mathematics and then other people say education. I'm totally lost. Please help. Thanks (:

Answer:
To become a high school mathematics teacher, there are several steps. Step one is to get good grades in high school, a B average would be nice. Step two is apply to a college or university and be admitted. Step three is to select education as a field of study particularly secondary education as a major. Step four it to take the appropriate mathematics course in the minor. Step five is to graduate from college and get a college diploma. Step six is apply to the Department of Education in your state for a secondary school license to teach mathematics. In some states, a test may also be required. Then, step seven is that you may seek a job through your college if it does teacher placements in secondary schools. If it doesn't provide that service for you, then apply directly to a school district that may need a secondary school mathematics teacher. Good luck.

To be a high school teacher, you need a bachelor's degree in math. In most states, you can also take a block of education courses to get licensed, or you can do a 5th year and get an M.A.T. Your starting salary would be higher with the M.A.T. In some states, math teachers are needed so much that they have something called "alternate licensure". They will hire people with math degrees who have passed the math Praxis (a test given by the Educational Testing Service), and give them a couple of years to take the education courses. You can look at the Department of Education website for your state and see what the requirements are.

To teach math at the high school level you need your major to be in math. You will still need some education courses to meet your requirements for your credential. Check with your state if you're in the US or the proper agency where you live, and be sure to check with the college you'll be attending, too.

You can go for both Mathematics or Education degrees eg B/MSc's or BEd's etc even PhD's if need be in the future but other Science options can be considered too so long as you are still enthusiatic about your aims.....Good luck. If in doubt, please contact Career advice!
