What are good cross country bindings and boots?

Leather open front boots on cross country?

    They'll be okay if you bought ones that are made of quality leather. It would never hurt to waterproof them, though. After you ride, dry them and apply a bit of leather oil. My new horse wears boots, and has an extremely expensive pair. When they get wet, I just dry them off and clean them up a bit, and they're good to go. Be careful to really dry them, though, because if water gets trapped somewhere like in the padding or something, they'll rot and fall apart quickly. I'm hoping that they're not padded with sheepskin or fur? If they are, they probably won't last as long if you get them wet often. If they have the foamy lining, it will help TONS because that stuff dries out really well, and will prevent the leather from rotting away. If you take care of them, though, and are pretty meticulous with them, they will last, no problem.

They'll be fine for piddly little fences, but I would never go XC over a decent height with open fronted boots - if your horse touches a fence and gets a splinter or scrapes himself he's going to be crippled. The thing you shouldn't go XC in is bandages - they'll soak up the water and slip and they can be very dangerous when they do so.

Usually closed front galloping boots are used for cross country. They give your horse a little protection if he hits a jump. As far as your question about leather goes, you could use them in the water jump as long as you take care of them properly afterwards. Your first answerer gave you some good info.

If they're nice expensive boots, don't use them. Plus, it's better to have closed front boots on xc.
