Is it hard to play alto sax?

Should I play "Take Five" by Paul Desmond for my Middle School solo/ensemble Festival for Alto Sax?

  • I live in KCK and I wanted to know if i should play take five by paul desmond for my middle school solo and ensemble festival. if you dont know what that is, its when all of the districts middle schools picks a couple kids from their school to play a solo or play with a group in front of a lot of people. i was going to play this piece with probably a piano accompaniment. By the way, I play an alto sax.

  • Answer:

While Take Five is amazing, I doubt anything jazz would be appropriate for Solo and Ensemble contest. Generally solo and ensemble contests are for classical solos. Play something out of this until you're good enough to play the standard saxophone repertoire. http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/Solos-for-the-Alto-Saxophone-Player/3164799

I'm going to have to say yes unless your solo ensemble concert is intended to be a classical showcase.

Absolutely. It's a classic. You will get mad respect for doing so.
